Copy Paste

Basic engineering is like tailoring, no "Copy Paste" Years ago, we embarked on the construction of a combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 478 MWe output electricity generation, on Turkish Therace close to the West Russian natural gas pipeline, next to the LNG terminal on the northern shores of the Sea of Marmara. As always, the domestic partner had undertaken the scope of civil construction, field assembly and simple non-pressure steel fabrication. Foreign partner was doing the basic engineering, feasibility, design, gas turbine, steam turbine supply, waste heat boiler design of the foreign joint business. Well-known US engineering firm sent a layout plan for the new power plant. It was the layout of the power plant that had been built elsewhere before. They changed the title block and sent it. We placed this plan on the real topography, and the work has begun. However, our topography was not a flat area. The place where the water storage tanks were located was on a hill. When the job was done, the seawater was pumped up, then dumped into the sea after cooling. Because of this updraft, an extra 2-MW of internal demand was lost due to the use of power plant water pumps. However, another similar project on the side, even though it was further away from the sea, did not suffer this loss. Would we make this mistake today? No, if we come across such a ready-made project today, we will not do it. Now we have experienced engineers, powerful computers, new software used by all reliable engineering companies. We can now do our own engineering design work entirely by ourselves. A similar situation has come to the fore for the nuclear power plant these days. The layout of a nuclear power plant, which was built 50-years ago in the very cold northern country, was implemented in our project, including the exact equipment. One inevitably remembers what happened in previous projects. We hope there will be no incompatibility in the future, Unfortunately, similar situations happen a lot in projects of foreigners. In order to avoid the basic design costs of the project, an old project is taken as it is, applied, but it does not work, the copy-paste application does not work. The layout plans of the equivalent projects in distant geographies were used in the construction of the local aluminum factory, aging iron and steel plant, and expired thermal power plant. These businesses worked, but they worked hard. Projects compatible with the freezing winter and scorching summer months there created problems in our geography. We have to do the project engineering field assembly turnkey works by ourselves. We must be in control. Due to the business shrinkage in the domestic market, our experienced engineering and contracting firms sought international projects and found them. Now we can buy special equipment, we can make foundation and detail design engineering, and we can do turnkey construction, field erection works. Good Money is always earned by doing turnkey business. Buyukada 18 September 2022

Socrates

The difference between generations never end, since Socrates... - Essay School is over, you are getting married. Your child is born, you try to raise him/ her in the best way according to your own aspirations and expectations. You want him/ her to go to the best schools, get a good education, do sports, play a musical instrument, piano, violin, guitar, enjoy life, and live a healthy and happy life. You want your child to have the things that you have worked hard for all your life and cannot reach. You want him/her to speak a few foreign languages. Then your child grows up, leaves home, goes to study abroad, leaves your home, city, lives in other environments, is affected by the habits of those environments, eats differently, dresses differently, behaves differently. Your son gets married, leaves the house, lives in another city in another house with another person, enters his wife’s home kitchen and clothing lifestyle. He is in the environment of his wife -in the environments that his wife likes. He eats the food she makes. He breaks away from you, you get together for short evenings, lunches, and holidays for a few days from time to time, you see that old boy has gone, a completely different person has come. He likes another music instead of opera or classical music, even TV-radio channels are different. His interests are different. The book, magazine, newspaper we read is different, the news we follow is different. You want him to eat healthy, he buys and eats things that are not your preference. You want him to wear nice clothes that fit his body, to be well-groomed and handsome. He wears whatever he finds in the morning, and goes to work that way. We can't go to the opera together. You mention on politics, the environment, daily news, he doesn't know about any of them. His world is different than yours. It is the principle of doing the opposite of everything you say. If he doesn't know what to do about a subject, he waits for your advice and does the just opposite of your advice. Everyone at home is a Ankara TED school graduate, except for me. The education quality of the TED school has been tried and tested for years. He objects for schooling your grandchild. He hurts here and there, has a fever, gags, "my son, see a proper specialist doctor", you say, "don't worry about it, I've seen a doctor, I'm taking my medication", he says. I used to go to my parents' house, because our cities were different, I would stay with them for a few days on the weekend. I drank my mother's soup in the morning. As privilaged children of the Republic, they had immutable rules in their homes. What Newspaper to read was certain, breakfast was certain, what to eat for dinner was certain, yogurt or lentil soup, plenty of salad, vegetables, leeks, spinach, chicken, fish or meatballs, fruit, my mother would put on her apron and cook slowly in the kitchen, sometimes I would go into the kitchen to help my mother, legumes I would peel, make salad, cut bread, chop onions. Then I went hiking and fishing with my father. I would talk to them for hours on current local and world news. At home, only TRT3 ckassical music FM was listened to on the radio and a few certain TV channels were watched. In the morning, I would shave and take a shower. No matter how much I grow up, I always wanted to remain their child, to be protected by them. Now my kids don't want such things. Internet games are addictive, they play Battlestar Galactica non-stop, they read the news on Twitter, Facebook, and eat fast food - junk food - tantuni wrap kokoreç that you will never eat. They drink cola instead of ayran. Starbucks coffee instead of brewed Turkish tea. They don't read newspapers, magazines or books. They do not read anything that is not on the iPhone iPad PC screen. They use iPhone iPad 24/7, they can't stop looking at the screen. Shaving in the morning and dressing properly is not a big deal for them. It's normal for everyone to walk around with a stubble and ripped jeans. All of these are normal, it is not necessary to think the same things, to vote for the same political party. But we can still ride a bike together, take a walk, play blackgammon, go to a concert, go swimming, jogging, go fishing together. We can talk and discuss current issues. Even Socrates complained about the difference and ignorance of youth in his own time in 450 BC. Nothing much has changed in 2500 years. Ankara 24 September 2022

Fight at workplace

Workers fighting at work -Essay I was working in a public machinery factory in Ankara in 1976. It's been a few years since I finished school. I was a maintenance and repair workshop engineer. I had about 30 employees who graduated from industrial vocational high school, motor, electrical and mechanics. We produce industrial machines and equipment. We used large heavy machines, lathes, milling machines, roller mills and welding machines in the factory. We did their periodic maintenance of 5000 hours. We renewed oil. We replaced and renewed the worn, deteriorated, broken gears, chains, and other parts. If the engine is burning, we renew its windings. Our work is difficult, there is a certain work schedule, heavy work benches have to work 24/7. We pay high premiums for weekend work and night shifts. My room is a high hut made of steel profiles that can be reached by stairs inside the maintenance workshop. I can see everything from above. The noise of the factory is making me giddy. I stuff cotton in my ears. I'm wearing boots with steel toe caps on my feet, a blue plastic helmet on my head, and a blue apron on my back. I have to tour the factory non-stop, follow the repairs. One day, while I was working in my room, I saw two newly hired young workers downstairs fighting hand to hand. They're not simple fights, ıthey're punching to the death. I can't remember what the reason was yesterday. I stormed out of my room, went down the stairs, shouted, "fight at work, I burned your kindling, walk to my room", I made the two of them sit next to the table in my room, put a pen and paper in front of them, "Write your defense, why did you fight? What happened?". I left, I went out, my head was angry, I also need to calm down, I wandered around the repair workbenches in the factory for about an hour, then I returned to the workshop. I went to my room. I took the papers on which they wrote their defense, then, with a very serious face, let them go home. Then I read the Papers. Two young workers, who punched each other to death, had difficulty expressing themselves when it came to making a written defense. They must have had a hard time talking about their troubles for an hour in the room. Both showed remorse in their defence. The next day, they got off as friends, speaking from the workers' service, became closer friends and even took care of each other throughout the day and the following days. Later, they took the master and foreman exams and were promoted, and they got the right to stay penniless for their families. Their children went to very good schools and received a good education. Fighting in the workplace is the reason for dismissal without compensation according to labor law, this is how it is all over the world. The fear of losing their job immediately ended the enmity between them. Why did they fight anyway? Even he is not clear in my mind. I did not prolong the matter, did not inform the administration, frankly, I "understood" their defense, the incident remained in my mind, but the defenses were forgotten at the bottom of my personal files. For me, it was a good business management experience that is not written in books, but learned by living. Frugal woman

“Frugal woman” by Vermeer- Essay This painting by Dutch painter Vermeer hangs in our kitchen. We bought it from the sales shop of the Amsterdam Museum where the original is, Strong cook woman with muscular arms carefully pours the milk into the container very slowly without wasting it. Of course, you remember the painting "The girl with the pearl earring". It was filmed. I think this picture is more important Winter is coming to Prinkipo island near istanbul (Büyükada), the weather is getting cold, there is no natural gas in our little summer house on Kadıyan slope, there is no combi boiler, I am sitting in a sweater. It is necessary to develop suggestions to use less natural gas and less electricity in winter. For example, common hot water should be given once or twice a week in houses, the ambient temperature should be kept at 18C, people should wear slippers, wool socks, sweaters inside the house. Russia is cutting off the gas it gives to Europe. This upcoming winter will be cold. Germany boosts solar and wind resources, brings austerity measures meanwhile. Night lighting has already been reduced in Europe, and shop window lighting has been turned off. I spent the year 1971 in England, there was an electric stove in my hostel room, we used to throw money to operate in order to break the cold in the evenings, I slept under two blankets at night, we always wore sweaters and cardigans, how did the British live during the war? They were already very frugal people, they continued after the war. However England is not dependent on Russia for natural gas, it has its own north sea resources, but frugality is a very important quality for them. Most homes in the UK do not have heating. Only the room you are in is heated. At night they are all closed. This is the case in all houses, rich or poor. It is the same in the queen's palace. The reasons for this difference in life should be investigated. In our houses, the paid workers water the garden every day, then they make noise all day with the lawn mower, all the energy loss, better keep the pine trees as they are. High-rise buildings in Istanbul, the rough construction of which is finished, are illuminated with fancy lights at night. Waste of money, waste of energy. I was in Moscow in the winter of 1976, the walls of the buildings were very thick stone structures, we went everywhere by subway, there was central heating everywhere, the interiors were warm, there was no shortage of energy, but there was rational savings, there was no waste. In our houses, tea is made, the kettle stands on the burning stove for hours, they drink a glass of tea, I boil water with a kettle, I brew in a thermos, no one likes it. In the machinery factory where I worked, there were high, wide and long halls. Steam air fans sent hot air in each column. We were cold in winter, but we had woolen clothes and thick boots on our feet. All heat was wasted. Europe and especially Germany have taken successful steps in renewable energy. Although Germany got less sun than us, the roof solar energy systems are advanced very well. Unfortunately, our situation is at the wrong level. When there is so much solar radiation in Turkey, it is very strange for me to generate our water and heat with the gas coming from one end of the world, from Siberia or Algeria. Every time I turn the hot water on when I put the teapot on the stove, I always think of this awkward situation and it reminds me that what we are doing is not rational. Compared to 30-40 years ago, the cost of providing electricity and heating from the sun has decreased and its feasibility has increased. Germany is to the north of us, however, when viewed from the air, there is almost no roof without solar panels or collectors. We urgently need a smart energy saving policy. 40 years ago, natural gas was the savior for Ankara's polluted air. But now I think we should be more rational about natural gas.
